The Hypocrite in You and Me

Merriam-Webster defines a hypocrite as :

a person who acts in contradiction to his or her stated beliefs or feelings

Each one of us is a hypocrite, in one way or the other. Me writing about us being hypocrites is hypocritical in itself. You may live in a false conundrum that you are different from the others, and you always mean what you say, but I don’t think there is any better way to say it : you don’t.

The ignition for writing about this came from two recent incidents which took place in India. First one was the Tablighi Jamaat affair, where close to 2500 worshipers broke the lock-down restrictions and assembled in the Markaz to offer their prayers. Close to 1100 of the devotees were found to be CoVid-19 positive. This event became, as Al-Jazeera calls it, “India’s worst coronavirus vector”. Though the event itself was disturbing, what was even more agonizing was people’s response to it. I had personal run-ins with people who were hell-bent on blaming the entire Indian Muslim population for the actions which correspond to less than 0.0015% of the same. There were cries all over social media as to how the religious community is irresponsible. What I fail to understand is, how can 172 million people be held accountable for the actions of 2500. The argument presented by majority of these people was even more disconcerting : other members of the community are supporting them. That is utter baloney; it cannot be farther from the truth. But this article is not about that incident; some other time maybe.

The second incident which brought us back to square one as a society, was the recent “Bois Locker Room”, where ~100 teenage boys from Delhi and Noida were body-shaming and commenting on girls’ bodies. The response to this mishap was equally mind-blowing. Girls, as well as some boys, started spreading the message of, “all men are trash”. I was infuriated at this fiddle-faddle of the pseudo-feminists. My simple question being : HOW CAN YOU GENERALISE AN ENTIRE COMMUNITY/GROUP BASED ON THE ACTIONS OF A FEW? I would understand if the groups or communities we are referring to were niche ones, but here, we are referring to an entire gender; 50% of the entire human population. I have mentioned this to tons of people, and i am pretty sure you are already aware, but feminism is defined as :

the theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes

And not, the superiority of one gender of the other. The word is a misnomer, thus the meaning needs to be understood first.

All in all, this was a short article, just meant to state some facts, and let the reader decide for himself/herself what one can and should interpret from these recent events, and how one can never truly be free from hypocrisy.
